Lindsay's Story
Lindsay Fox began racing
go-karts when she turned 18, but she has been dreaming about racing cars
her entire life, well, most of it anyway.
When Lindsay was seven she attended the 24 Hours of Daytona at Daytona
International Speedway and has been hooked every since. A fan of the
Group 44 Jaguars, Lindsay followed the IMSA racing carefully cheering on
Bob Tullius and the gang (hence the green stripes on her helmet). In
1989 Lindsay’s father, Wilshire, took her to the 12 Hours of Sebring and
from there it’s been downhill.
When she was nine Lindsay started working in Timing and Scoring for IMSA.
At the age of 13 she and her father joined the SCCA and Lindsay worked
in Timing and Scoring for several events each year.
Lindsay and her father made a deal early on that if Lindsay stayed in
school and graduated from college that her dad would help her race. In
August 1995 Lindsay set off to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University but
met Wilshire in Jacksonville on a regular basis to race the go-kart at
103rd Street Sports Complex.
Lindsay’s first kart was a Bug chassis with a 5hp Briggs and Stratton
motor. It wasn’t fast, but Lindsay was having a ball. In 1997 Wilshire
helped Lindsay buy a Margay chassis with a Yamaha motor on it. That is
when Lindsay moved up to the Yamaha Light class and started doing well.
By 1999 Lindsay was a fixture in Jacksonville and started racing
Divisional and National WKA races. Her travels took her from Naples,
Florida to Norway, Illinois with stops at Charlotte, North Carolina and
St. Petersburg, Florida along the way.
In October 2000 Lindsay captured the North Florida Karting Club Yamaha
Light Championship in a close battle. In December of 2000 Lindsay raced
in her last National kart race and then sold her Margay Brava/Yamaha.
Lindsay’s car racing career started in January 2000 when she attended
the Skip Barber three-day racing school. She was lucky enough to be one
of only seven students and she got a lot of track time. She learned the
principles of driving a racecar while at Skip Barber and recommends the
course to anyone serious about racing cars. Lindsay earned her SCCA
regional license that weekend but would have to wait until July 2001 to
get to use it.
In July 2001 Lindsay attended the SCCA driving school at Sebring
International Raceway’s club course. This was Lindsay’s first taste of a
Spec Racer Ford and her first chance at competition. At the end of the
two day school Lindsay’s group participated in a practice race. At the
end of the race Lindsay took top honors. (for the full story see
Lindsay’s Race Report).
Since that day Lindsay has raced in several SCCA events. She has not
only raced in the Spec Racer Ford class, but also in a Spec Miata with
Christine Gurley and in a Dave Brown Motorsports AS Mustang.
In 2003 Lindsay evaluated her career in racing and decided to go back to
her roots, go-kart racing. In October 2003 a new CKI chassis was
purchased with the intent to race in Piston Port (PP) Can. Lindsay first
raced the CKI at Daytona and brought home two top ten finishes.
A little more than a year after buying the new kart Lindsay scored her
first national victory in PP Can Lite at Road Atlanta. Three months
later she repeated her national success by finishing first in PP Can
Lite at Roebling Road Raceway. Because of her national success Lindsay
decided to pursue six national events with hopes of finishing in the top
five year-end points. Another national victory came at Lindsay's first
visit to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. These wins were good enough
for Lindsay to place fourth in both the PP Can Lite and Medium standings
at the end of the year.
In 2006 Lindsay competed in 7 of
the 8 WKA National races. Her travels took her to three new tracks
in New Hampshire, Indiana and Michigan, where she scored a win in PP Can
Lite. The National Championship was within reach a Lindsay headed
to the last event of the season at Road Atlanta. Lindsay fell
short by one position and had to settle for second in both classes.
In 2007 Lindsay plans to continue racing in the WKA Natioanl Road Racing
Series, but only at select tracks.
