Southern Road Racing Series
Roebling Road Raceway
February 13, 2000
Well, here is part two of the weekend. We got to Savannah around
midnight, slept for a while (Charles more than dad and I), and went for
the breakfast of champions at the Waffle ("awful") House.
From there we went to the track, got registered and then looked up at
the sky. The fog WAS NOT lifting. But we stuck it out. Changed motors on
the sprint kart. Added 25 pounds, to the kart, not me... (the awful
house didn't have enough doughnuts).
Around that time practice was over and they were changing the schedule
all around. In order to give us an extra practice session they moved my
sprint race to the first race and my enduro race to the second race.
I got one practice session in the sprint kart and dad took the enduro
for a test. I was running to the grid as they were calling my name
telling me that I was about to miss my race. This was very
uncharacteristic of me, and I'm sure Dave, Ed, Chuck and Clyde were
standing back and laughing at me! HA HA, I HATE BEING LATE!
I started last in my class. I don't recall passing anyone, but I did see
several people off in the grass and gravel. I just kept running. We
decided that this race we would run a regular motor, with an engine
clutch and a sprint setup. I FINISHED 2nd!! I was really surprised! I
guess attrition is a girl's best friend!
I jumped out of my sprint kart ran over and jumped into the enduro.
Thank goodness dad was there to work on the kart during my other race!
We forgot to add fuel and change the pedals (it always helps if you can
reach the gas). I started last in my class again. I got a decent start,
4th. As the race progressed I just wasn't getting many RPM and the can
classes were passing me!
I was going around turn 4 when the motor just died. All I could think
was, at least this is my motor, not dad's! When I pulled off of the
track and got a ride back, I looked at the motor and the spark plug
popped out!! Oooppps. I got back to the pits they weighed me and then
Dave mentioned that we were allowed to go back out, so we cranked her up
and off I went. 2,000 more RPM and 3 seconds a lap faster!! Yippee. I'm
not real sure where I finished, but I felt much better after that!
As for dad, he had a good start, no plugs left out of the clutch! He
settled in to 12th. He and Chuck had a good race for a while and Chuck
finally passed him. Dad stayed in 13th place for the checkered flag. I
know this because I know how to score and no matter how much I try to
teach the fellas, they don't get it!
The weekend was a success, we both learned more about the enduro and
what gears we need to try next time. We also learned that it's crazy to
try and run 3 classes with two karts. So next time. I'll race on
Saturday and dad will race on Sunday or vice versa, until we have
everything down to a fine art.
As for the next enduro race, it's sometime in May. Of course the sprint
races are still going strong, so you can expect a report after the
Divisional Feb. 26!
